On “CORE”

The Coleridgean concept of the Primary Imagination as the repetition in the finite mind of the Eternal and Infinite “I am’ finds expression in the infinite possibilities of the incomplete circle in the new series of paintings titled Core by Pravin Kannanur. The approximation to the perfect circle in each canvas and the three dimensional gyre-like penetration into a swirling vortex of light and shade give a centripetal force to the paintings, with almost a suggestion of the spiritual heart-centre of the human consciousness reflected in the universe at large. The whirl of colours beautifully blended is instinct with the dynamics of the planetary universe and yet the stillness of the centre holds an eloquent calm. An effect like profusion of colour produced by the solar energy and radiance splashed on the earth’s green mantle with varied seasonal tints is reflected in the scattered rays that emerge from the centre of each painted motif, giving each a powerful centrifugal force as well. Whether the painter intended it or not an almost spiritual connotation of the journey from Being to Becoming, back to Being, emerges as a final effect from each canvas, especially the large ones. - Meera Balachandran, Former Professor

The artisanal approach

You asked me about intentionality, my approach to the painting surface. Knowing me to be an author of physical and ephemeral works, what, you ask, is my experiential register in practicing abstractionism?

Personality of a Painting

“You really have seen something!” You exclaimed to me, when I opened the door of the tiny store room. The light fell softly from the low wattage bulb on the low ceiling and it accentuated the glow of the vertical painting. I hadn’t opened up the store for anyone but I had done so for You because, the way You had been watching the paintings, I thought that You really had seen something.
